Operational Art?

Operational Art?

Operational Art?

What the hell is that?

Art of War? War of Art?

Art of War? War of Art?

Armed Men

Sun Tzu's Art of War

Throw your soldiers into positions whence there is no escape,

and they will prefer death to flight.

If they will face death, there is nothing they may not achieve.

Bestow rewards without regard to rule,

issue orders

without regard to previous arrangements;

and you will be able to handle a whole army as though you had to do with but a single man.

Rewards without regard to Rule

Only so many stories exist. Some say nine, some say 11. They probably need to be an odd number any how.

Or could that be a binary number, the binary number - Zero One?

Binary Thinking

Western thinking equals either / or thinking. Is this binary? On - Off. Full - Empty. Right - Wrong. God - Devil. Male - Female? Young - Old? Life - Death. Defeat - Victory.

Socrates believed, and his student Plato expressed, that there is an absolute truth that can be revealed through logical philosophy, rather than the human senses.

Aspects of Argument

There are three aspects of argument.

Reason, Ethics and Emotion - Logos, Ethos, Pathos.

Reason is something we 'know'. Ethics is something we 'believe' and Emotion is something we 'feel'. Are these three separate dimensions? Are we now in a base three world? The Machine, the Ghost and something else?

Reason doesn't rest on the back of an unseen turtle. It starts somewhere. There has to be some kind of basic premise, some 'truths universally acknowledged'.

This is why some people think that the mind is this Yes No Left Right Good Bad engine.

I don't know if its Art but I know what I like

  • I don't know if its Art but I know what I like.
  • I don't know what is true but I know what I believe.
  • I don't know what you mean but I know what I feel.

Defeat the sushi invasion

Bullshit or not?

Post emperor's new clothes. Something beyond postmodern, post-postmodern, post human, post art.

Art is a point of view. You are either in the right place (at the right time) or you're out.

No. Of course not. Retro is chic, fur is the new must have environmentally friendly renewable resource. Mink swim suits, so next season.

Camo, retro or still packing a punch?

Origami tank building, a meditational pursuit.

Do I know anything or just think I know what I believe? I am a butterfly dreaming I am . . . what?

Beyond Yes or No

Edward De Bono suggested a new idea, not yes and not no. Po.

Eastern thinking is more Yes and No. Yin and Yang are not opposites.

This is seen visually in the yinyang symbol. This is a recursive yinyang.

Wisdom from the I Ching

To examine yinyang thinking in action read the I Ching, the book of changes. There appear to be opposites, Male Female, Heaven and Earth, Mountain and Valley but they do not exist as binary opposites. They combine to produce a multitude of meaning. Each hexagram of the I Ching is formed by establishing the top trigram, then the bottom trigram. The two ideas join to form a multitude of meaning.

A Brief I Ching

A map of the trigrams which form the I Ching

Hexagram Number 01 Keyword(s): The Creative Principle  Symbolic of: the vital spirit of heaven

For a detailed reading of the KHIEN Hexagram visit:-

The 6 lines of the hexagrams, a solid line or a broken line appear to represent opposites and some people think that they can be determined with the toss of a coin, heads, male principle, unbroken line - tails, female principle, broken line but there is another dimension to this, moving or static, flow or stillness. Are we moving into imaginary numbers or hyperspace?

The Art of War

There is war. War is a universal 'truth' as far human behavior is concerned. Why?

Tao Te Ching

Three Extracts from the Tao Te Ching

Success is as dangerous as failure.

Hope is as hollow as fear.

What does it mean that success is a dangerous as failure?

Whether you go up the ladder or down it,

you position is shaky.

When you stand with your two feet on the ground,

you will always keep your balance.

What does it mean that hope is as hollow as fear?

Hope and fear are both phantoms

that arise from thinking of the self.

When we don't see the self as self,

what do we have to fear?

See the world as your self.

Have faith in the way things are.

Love the world as your self;

then you can care for all things.

Is War the Mind of State?

When the Master governs, the people

are hardly aware that he exists.

Next best is a leader who is loved.

Next, one who is feared.

The worst is one who is despised.

If you don't trust the people,

you make them untrustworthy.

The Master doesn't talk, he acts.

When his work is done,

the people say, “Amazing:

we did it, all by ourselves!”

Is Art a State of Mind?

Can you coax your mind from its wandering

and keep to the original oneness?

Can you let your body become

supple as a newborn child's?

Can you cleanse your inner vision

until you see nothing but the light?

Can you love people and lead them

without imposing your will?

Can you deal with the most vital matters

by letting events take their course?

Can you step back from you own mind

and thus understand all things?

To gain anything you must first lose everything

Read the Tao Te Ching

The Tao is like a well:

used but never used up.

It is like the eternal void:

filled with infinite possibilities.

Nine Situations

Sun Tzu's Nine Situations could be read as the nine stories of war.

Art must be beyond stories.

Art and Chi

Art is visual embodiment of chi ~ its manifestation must be boundless,

thus filled with infinite possibilities.

You don't understand me
